I just recently did this, for my own home network and then for a couple of others. I came out just a little under $700 for 1.5 TB of RAID 5 storage. I wrote up a little bit on slashdot: http://linux.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=367261&cid=21435931 I used a amd64 board with built on gigabit LAN, 1 GB RAM, and 4x500GB WD Caviars. I think buck for byte, the 500's were more efficient than the 1TB ones, I'm not sure about now. I tested RAID5 and RAID 1, and thought the slight speed hit of raid 5 was ok given the extra storage allowed. It's already saved me twice from catastrophic failures.
