Yes, but that's an overgeneralization.  There are big differences in 
handling big files vs TB's of tiny files, and in fast-changing vs. 
mostly static content.  And to a certain extent, the speed of the 
clients and the network also affect how much is practical to back up on 
a single server.

If you expect to use tape as part of the regular routine, backuppc 
probably shouldn't be your first choice.  Beyond that, the main 
constraint compared to other systems is that the entire archive has to 
be on one filesystem so that hardlinks can work.  This can impose an 
upper limit on the size as a side effect, although sufficiently 
expensive hardware - or clever tuning - might provide a solution.  I 
tend to be wary huge filesystems and the time it takes to fsck them when 
something goes wrong, so I'd prefer to run several separate instances 
just on general principles anyway.
