I'm not sure why that would happen.  I have a machine here named 
java-dev-2 and nmblookup from another machine finds it (both are 
linux/Centos) - but my names are also in dns.

If you control the dhcp server, you can configure it to always give the 
same IP to the same ethernet MAC address to nail it down.
