I have officially requested Backuppc be included in the nexenta core
repositories. Nexenta needs just a few updates such as File:rsyncp is a few
versions behind, and the debian/ubuntu backupps deb files configure backuppc
to point to the wrong locations for a few utilities like
ping(nexenta=/usr/sbin/ping, ubuntu=/bin/ping)
I do have backuppc running BUT i get a few errors as I forced through the
requierment of libfile-rsyncp-perl v0.68 as nexenta has v0.52
Everything but rsync backups are working(because of the libfile-rsyncp-perl
module version) and it runs very well in vmware. I am actually pleasantly
suprised at the performance within vmware. i have read up a bit on zfs and
am using some of the informational commands to see how zfs is working and it
is able to compensate to some degree for the poor disk i/o performance in
vmware. I can extrapolate its process of cached i/o writes and see the
bandwidth at a steady 100KB/s and then rise for a few seconds as it does the
write. I have switched back and forth between writing to a ufs volume and a
zfs volume backing up a remote machine and zfs is really showing its stuff
here. I need to get one of my spare desktop machines from work to test this
on real hardware as my home machine has a sata controller that is not
compatible with nexenta yet.
vmware's miserable network performance is also hindering my test a bit.
for those that do not know but are interested, nexenta core is an OS build
from ubuntu 7.10 but modified to use the opensolaris kernel. result = easy
to manage ubuntu/debian system. ZFS filesystem. Extremely good at heavy I/O
loads such as the typical loads with backuppc AND is both a filesystem and a
volumemanager with builting raidz(like raid5 but a bit better) and built in
compression, as well as automatic nfs and iscsi sharing. Extremely easy
management, disk replacement. ability to grow any zfs volume HOT. modify
filesystem perameters HOT.
