Sounds like you installed a much older version of BackupPC. Green used to be the old color scheme (circa 2.x). That's consistent with the lack of config editor. Since the config file paths are more flexible in the later versions it is likely that the correct configs might not being picked up. Also, while BackupPC is certainly designed to be forward compatible (later versions of BackupPC can handle backups taken on older versions), the opposite might not be true between major version changes.
