Okay, this may be a simple error. If you see 'unable to read 4 bytes', what this usually means is that you have a communication error. BackupPC is receiving data, but something is mis-configured. My first suspect is the ssh keys. Does the 'backuppc' user on your backup machine have the keys it needs in its .ssh/ directory?
