I'm looking at one for eSATA anyway. I don't want a network one.

Chris,

I have used them before -- just once. They do work with Linux, however
you'll have to jump through some hoops. First you'll have to do a firmware
update to allow SSH. Then you'll have to enable NFS or you can use the
default CIFS if you like. More importantly to me, some of them only have
small CPUs (the one I had was an ARM-9) and only have ~ 384 MB of RAM. The
network card could only support about 150K/s -- backups took a long time.

Overall I wouldn't recommend using it for BackupPC or any backup system
really; but if you do here's a link to a site with a lot of modification
info and instructions for getting into the host OS:

http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/hacks-and-howto

Hope that helps,

Ronnie

Has anyone used the Western Digital My Book studio drives with Linux? Do
they work with Linux? Western Digital says that they don't support them.
