Les,

It would be great if the BackupPC Admin interface gave the ability to
create a template and then when you create a new host, simply apply that
template.

Part of this feature is already available. When you create a host
you can first select the "Add" button. You then set the new host
as "NEWHOST=COPYHOST". This creates NEWHOST and copies the config
from COPYHOST.

You could create dummy hosts for each machine type (with backups disabled)
or just use a live machine as the COPYHOST.

Sorry, my last post only got sent back to Les Mikesell, summarizing below...

its close......and yeah i could create some dummy hosts that have backups disabled......but i'd like to have say /etc/BackupPC/template with a vista.pl, winxp.pl, localhost.pl, etc etc pre-configured. When i install backuppc on a site, i drop in the template files. then into the cgi to create hosts and apply a template without having to think about setting up one host with the initial settings.

Maybe i can automate dropping in hosts with Backups disabled, email notifications disabled (or to a dud address or every 999 days) and setting the config's on these hosts to be read only. Then when adding hosts you can say NEWHOST=vista or NEWHOST=winxp etc.

I'll give that a shot in the next couple of days and if that works out ok i'd be happy with that.

Taking it a step further......when you select a template, before it
applies it prompts you with a list of those changes in the template,
giving you the ability to override or exclude some or all of the
template settings.

This isn't implemented currently and would take quite a bit of effort.
It's probably not much faster looking through a list of which settings
you want to accept from the template, versus just looking at the
settings themselves.

Your right, i just thought if it was easy to implement it might not take that much extra to do.....obviously a lot of work for little gain, no need to go to this extreme.

Thanks,

Les
