Aha. Ok. It must be very dear to him. :-)

Then I would recommend that you exclude most of the data that should be backed 
up. Then:
1) Back up and make sure that all wasn't excluded was copied to the server.
2) Remove something from the exclusion list.
3) Go to 1 until exclusion list is empty.

That way you iteratively build up the backup without having to transfer all in 
one chunk. And when this process is over, you don't have to deal with multiple 
shares.
