Hi Adam, I had done exactly what you said, but in the process of redoing it I figured out what was going on. After installation it worked fine, until the point at which I changed the log directory from a blank entry to /var/log/backuppc. Other config changes didn't stop it working- but that one did. When I changed it back to a blank it worked again. Oddly it would write logs into the new directory perfectly well even when it was failing to start. I don't really understand why it failed, but I can certainly live with the default logging directory!
Many thanks for your help Jo ----------------------------------------------------- Joanne Cook Senior IT Support and Development Oxford Archaeology (North) 01524 880212 http://thehumanjourney.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Adam Goryachev" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Joanne Cook" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: [email protected] Sent: 22 July 2008 13:46:35 o'clock (GMT) Europe/London Subject: Re: [BackupPC-users] unix bind error on ubuntu 8.04 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Joanne Cook wrote: > Hi List, > I tried to completely reinstall backuppc by running sudo apt-get purge > backuppc, reinstalled it, > and left it as the default configuration (smb) with the only entry in hosts > being localhost, > but this gave the same error. Do you mean you ran "apt-get --purge remove backuppc" and then "rm -rf /etc/backuppc /var/lib/backuppc" and then "apt-get install backuppc" I think you might need to do all that to completely remove backuppc if you had modified any of the config files.
