As mentioned earlier, you can also backup using ndb (Network Block Device) over a truly remote TCP/IP connection, almost the same as AoE (except you need to specify the hostname/IP and port number to import the drive from). This allows for the case where you want a true "off-site" storage location without a bridged VPN.
