is /var/lib/backuppc a link to the external drive or did you mount it
there/

sounds like you have a link setup, if you remove the link and then mount the
external drive to /var/lib/backuppc it may fix your issue.

basically, the link doesnt register with the `df` command because df looks
to the root of the mount(which is `/`).  if you mount it, then `df` should
return the free space on the external drive instead of on `/`.
