I thought the root user exists in ubuntu, it just doesn't have a 
password by default.  You don't need a password if you set up ssh keys. 
  You may have to 'sudo su -' and enter your own password to get root 
shell access to set up the key, but that's standard procedure on systems 
that play nanny with sudo.
