this *could be* the problem. Ideally, authorized_keys should not be readable for anyone except root, though I seem to get by with world-readable authorized_keys in world accessible .ssh directories. I believe the requirements of ssh are that the home directory(!), the .ssh directory and the authorized_keys file must all be writeable for the user only (config setting "StrictModes", sparcely documented).
