Actually, you can see that backuppc has restarted the backup automatically every hour which is the default wakeupschedule. You could set the schedule to run every 10 minutes, which means within 10mins of the failure backuppc will retry. Of course, if backuppc isn't actually making any progress, then it will never complete a successful backup....
