I'm backing up several machines (in total 30 hosts), mostly Linux, but some Windows XP, too. Restoring a Linux machine worked like a champ. I formatted the disk, booted a rescue CD, extracted the tar file and rewrote the bootloader. The machine came up as usual. Perfect! But I'm having issues with Windows. I'm backing up the XP machines through rsync/ssh and Cygwin. I booted from a (Linux) rescue CD, formatted the disk and started the extraction of the restore.tar file. But I'm getting loads of errors among different files: "Cannot open: Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character" The affected files are the ones with the German Umlauts as follows: ./Programme/Windows NT/Zubeh\366r/* So is there any solution for this or is it just impossible to backup/restore a non-US charset machine?
