If you start off using packages, it's best to keep using packages. Clobbering your package-managed install with a tarball install is likely to lead to issues down the line when you try to upgrade your system and the package wants to be updated... except it isn't there anymore. If you can't wait for someone to package 3.2 up; make your own. it's not that hard to learn to do, and it makes downgrading trivial. it's probably worth the effort to learn to make a package (especially given that you have the 3.1 source packages available); in order to save yourself the pain, uncertainty, and hassle that will come when you try to downgrade a tarball install. (Plus, the knowlege will serve you in good stead for other applications, not just backuppc). -- Carl Soderstrom Systems Administrator Real-Time Enterprises www.real-time.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stay on top of everything new and different, both inside and around Java (TM) technology - register by April 22, and save $200 on the JavaOne (SM) conference, June 2-5, 2009, San Francisco. 300 plus technical and hands-on sessions.
