Fair enough, I wasn't thinking internationalization. There are other workarounds, vnc, nx, ssh tunnels in a dedicated browser session. Just takes more time to set up for a simple 'start a backup on this host before I do something potentially dangerous'. But using BackupPC_serverMesg to trigger the backup and check the status works.
