I started out with a Dell PowerEdge with a 2.00GHz Intel CPU and 512MB of RAM, backing up to a software RAID 5 of four commodity SATA drives. I later doubled RAM (1 GB total) and the speed increase was at least double. I don't know if additional RAM would increase its performance further, but I'd recommend no less than 1 gig.
