Personally, when administrating a machine I try to avoid being too clever with my configurations. One needs to consider that another administrator may come along and have little or no clue how things are set up with all the levels of indirection and dependency. As such, I often take some extra effort to explicitly spell out what all the settings are such that the behavior may be readily discovered. That said, I also realize that I don't know what's best for everyone else, and it's good to have labor-saving flexibility and configurability.
