I have been using rsync to sync two servers for a long time but have
recently started experimenting with DRDB for the remote sync. Are
you interested in running two machines or do you just want to
archive the data?
If you just want an archive of the data maybe consider just pulling
off periodic full backups to your alternate media. You have two
options really which is to do an archive or restore and put the tar
or zip archive on the external storage or you could even copy the
specific backup for the pool/cpool directory onto the media by host.
Another option would be to create a MD1 mirror with your primary
data as a member of the mirror and your USB device as a member. You
can add the USB device to the array long enough for it to sync and
the remove it for offsite storage. You can then re-sync it anytime
you like or even rotate in other disks. This can be time consuming
but I see MD1 rebuilds running at 30MB/s+ on very modest hardware so
you could do a Terabyte in 8 or 10 hours and the array can remain
active (though slow). My 4 drive array rebuilds at about 80MB/s
and it is just 4 seagate 7200.11 drives in a raid10 (two mirrors in
raid1) and I *can* add a single USB disk to the array though I have
only done this in testing and it isnt my standard practice. I
archive to DVD periodically.
