That's the way I do it here, too. Laptop will be backed up through OpenVPN. OpenVPN will be started with system boot, so as soon as the laptop has Internet he's connected through OpenVPN to the BackupPC server. As soon as BackupPC wakes up, he schedules a backup for the laptop, who is connected. Backup runs fine. And as long as there is no Internet connectiong the BackupPC server just tells me "No ping". Works great! No need to perform a manual backup.
