Problem finally resolved.

The error was caused by BackupPC being unable to locate the rsync binary on the
client device. The Last Bad Xfer log gave me the clue : Fatal error (bad
version): ash: /usr/bin/rsync: not found

The device is a Synology NAS server and instead of having the binary at
/usr/bin/rsync it was located at usr/syno/bin/rsync , so the standard setting
in BackupPC didn't point to the correct path.

Once again my thanks to all who have given me assistance - it is greatly
appreciated.
