There are many reasons this could be happening, but to throw one more possibility your way -- I recently had this problem after upgrading a client machine to Fedora 14. Subsequently, about 80-90% of backups of that client started failing. The solution was simply to upgrade to the latest Fedora 14 kernel. That was about 2-3 weeks ago, and the abort hasn't occurred even once since.
