I strongly suggest everyone read the google paper on hard disk drive failures, and methods for predicting them... One of the issues they noted was that age wasn't a factor after the first few months, and before about 5 years or more (I forget the exact numbers...) Also, usage wasn't a great factor, though all their drives are powered on all the time :) I've read parts of it a few times, and think most people here would find it interesting reading if you have the time... It touches on temperature of drives as well.
