the question is not whether it's there, it's the in-thread relationships. ASCII art also doesn't transport well - I'll try just the same. This is what the thread looks like to me: 2945 Mar 24 Rickinfl ( 26) [BackupPC-users] Error: Unable to open /u 2946 Mar 24 backuppc@kosows ( 47) +->Re: [BackupPC-users] Error: Unable to 2947 Mar 24 Rickinfl ( 20) +->[BackupPC-users] Error: Unable to open 2948 Mar 24 Holger Parplies ( 37) | +-> 2949 Mar 24 Rickinfl ( 20) +-> 2950 Mar 24 backuppc@kosows ( 31) +->Re: [BackupPC-users] Error: Unable t 2951 Mar 24 Holger Parplies ( 70) +->Re: [BackupPC-users] (solved) Erro 2952 Mar 24 backuppc@kosows ( 24) | +->Re: [BackupPC-users] (solved) Er 2953 Mar 24 Les Mikesell ( 35) | +->Re: [BackupPC-users] (solved) Er 2954 Mar 24 Holger Parplies ( 49) | +->[BackupPC-users] [OT] message 2955 N Mar 25 David Kuntadi ( 21) | +->Re: [BackupPC-users] (solved) 2956 Mar 25 David Kuntadi ( 20) | +-> 2957 Mar 25 David Kuntadi ( 35) +->Re: [BackupPC-users] Error: Unable 2958 Mar 25 Holger Parplies ( 22) +-> 2959 Mar 24 backuppc@kosows ( 26) +->Re: [BackupPC-users] Error: Unab It's actually very clear who responded to which message. My point was that #2949 was, technically, a response to #2945 and not to #2948, though I don't suspect the OP meant to call himself rude. Using e-mail things "just work", because MUAs usually get the headers right. Again, it's not about understandability in *this* case, it's about technical correctness. I might decide to read a message (or not) based on which part of the thread it appears to be in, and I might have a different context for understanding the message, depending on where it is put. I might decide to ignore the rest of this thread but still want to read direct replies to my messages. If your MUA doesn't support correct threading and instead lists all messages chronologically (perhaps sorted by thread, maybe even only by subject line), then you're free to be happy with that, but it doesn't make it correct. A forum basically cannot do threading correctly. I've recently seen an attempt. It was a really long thread with over 800 messages, coming in at a fast rate. Basically, you needed to re-read everything each day to find out which messages were new. Unusable. A MUA simply marks new messages (#2955).
