When the NAS is mounted on the machine running backuppc, both devices must be up to get _any_ backups. Thats two single-points of failure in a row compared to one. (Of course the machines-to-be-backed-up have to be up as well.) When additionally the machine running backuppc is the main server (as is in many one-server setups) you get funny effects: The main server will fail to boot or at least take a very long time when the NAS is not reachable, the NAS on the other hand is waiting on the dhcp-server of the main-server to be active so it gets an IP and network connectivity... In short: Don't do that. Run backuppc on a dedicated (virtual or real) machine and give it all the disk-space it needs without relying on external stuff. The backups are the most valuable thing you (or your client) has.
