Alexander: I have not modified that setting and it is still at 7 days.

Peter,

When I use the web interface there is a section called Email summary and that
is totally empty.

The Old LOGs have entries like this but they show up every night that there is
a log:

2014-01-06 01:02:42 BackupPC_nightly now running BackupPC_sendEmail

2013-12-24 07:51:59 BackupPC_nightly now running BackupPC_sendEmail

This command, run from the command line, and if BackupPC is down will produce
an email:

su -s /bin/bash backuppc -c "/usr/share/BackupPC/bin/BackupPC_sendEmail -c"

That command with the –t flag runs with no output:

bash-4.1$ /usr/share/BackupPC/bin/BackupPC_sendEmail -t

bash-4.1$

I’m really curious if it’s more a designed behavior. Would it instead send me
an email if the box was pingable, but hadn’t been backed up for a week? But
since it’s not pingable, it’s considered okay that it hasn’t been backed up?
Like I said, that’s not the behavior I want but I’m not sure how the program is
actually supposed to work.

Dan

I had a similar problem 2 years ago when setting up BackupPC.

I made some notes at that time, which I am now trying to interpret ;-)

What I found at the time was that BackupPC_sendEmail uses slightly different
scripting for sending test messages, admin messages, and messages to users, so
the successful sending of a test message doesn't guarantee successful sending
of the other types! However,

1. I believe you should see some messages in the BackupPC log (through the web
interface) if it is attempting to send email messages

2. Have you tried (as the BackupPC user) running BackupPC_sendEmail with the -t
option - it will send the output to STDOUT instead of to the mail program?

/usr/share/BackupPC/bin/BackupPC_sendEmail will generate a test message.

Unfortunately, I’m not getting warning messages telling me that one of my
client’s hasn’t backed up for a week. I’ve checked /var/log/maillog and there
is no attempt to send mail.

My shell is set to /sbin/nologin for the backuppc user. Perhaps that’s the
problem.

When I check /var/log/BackupPC/LOG there’s no mention of the client at all.
The client is offline due to it being a laptop. Is this by design? I mean,
I’d expect it to tell me that it hasn’t backed up for a week whether the
target/client was offline or not. But just because I expect it doesn’t mean
that is what the authors designed.

Any ideas?

Dan
