Thanks for that. The command itself appeared to work:
james@store-01:/var/lib$ sudo chmod 644 /var/lib/backuppc/log/pool.rrd
james@store-01:/var/lib$

(no error!)

However, even after a full system restart the graphs still do not appear on
the main dashboard.
