Terve Eero,

- Is encryption of backups nowdays supported?

Encryption in transit is supported by select protocols (e.g. rsync uses SSH).

Encryption at rest is supported by underlying filesystems or block layers.

There is no built-in encryption.

- Is s3 backend supported in any way?

In short, no. The long answer is something along the lines of not-too-hard to implement. For a proof on concept you might try mounting S3. However, BackupPC does not quite have a buffer suitable for object storage. The result would be very slow backups at present. Additionally, some S3 implementations are follow the eventual consistency paradigm which requires even more intelligence on the compute node.

- How about replication of backuppc to another host? is the rsync the best way (my backuppc is version 4.2.1)

There are several options for this. Search the mailing list for details. A short list is:

- zfs/btrfs incrementals

- rsync with BackupPC v4 backups only

- DRBD

- parallel BackupPC server

- What is best way to implement offline backups ?

With BackupPC being a network backup system, the only option for it to work offline is to install it locally. Or, if you meant cold/air gapped/archival backups, the list of options is quite long.

br,
Eero

Hope this helps,

Johan
