I would suggest the following should work, with minimal issues/disk space issues. 1) Copy (with hardlinks) the required pc directories from your old backup server to the new server. Ensure that none of the backup numbers conflict with existing backup numbers on the new server. Ideally, you would have no old backups on the new server to begin with.
None of these systems existed in the "new" backuppc system and as backups are numbered per-host, not globally, I had no need to worry about numbering conflicts.
2) Do the restore from BPC as needed. 3) Delete everything you copied in step 1 above 4) Do a full backup on the server the files were restored to in step 2
Yes, this is precisely what I'm trying to do, just with a 3 year lag between step 1 and 2 ;)
I probably need(ed) to disable the host I'm restoring to (assuming BPC will still allow me to restore to it if I do?) to stop the daily backups in the meantime.
You could do step 4 before step 3 but you will need sufficient space on the new BPC server, which you don't have based on your original post.
I was hoping to do them the other way around as this way around is riskier as there will be a period between 3 and 4 where no backup copy of the data exists at all. If BackupPC will follow symlinks for the pc directories, I could move the "old" hosts to a separate file-system to get them off the pool block device and drop symlinks to them in their place. Hmm, that's an idea. My current space constraint on the pool filesystem is due to needing it to fit (a snapshot of) the file-system into the off-site media, not a lack of available capacity locally.
Also note that the default BPC config will stop doing backups when the used disk space is 95% or higher, so be careful/check that scheduled backups of all your other live servers is still happening as needed.
Yes, although oddly backuppc is still backing up my other hosts despite being configured this way and >95% used.
