Ok, so I figured it out but it might be worth documenting somewhere... I haven't done a from scratch install in MANY years (speaks to how well it works once setup!) so when I setup my hosts I chose DHCP because all of my hosts are using DHCP to get a reserved IP address from my USG.
I finally figured out that was causing backuppc to try to do a nmblookup on my hosts which doesn't work because I'm pure linux at home and I'm not running samba or anything so I was getting the error saying the host didn't match the ip address because the lookup was timing out. So two things I think think of: 1. It would have been helpful to include the actual error output from nmblookup. I would have figured things out much sooner. 2. Why did it silently fail when I initiated backups from the localhost? (just said OK but did nothing) and only gave me the IP/hostname error when initiating a backup from a different host on the network? Thanks, Richard
