Thank you, Kris. I may be wrong, but I think the major issue here is with 'smbclient' crashing a few seconds after startup, rather than the file permission here. (The smbclient crash can be reproduced manually, outside of BackupPC.)

I have filed a Fedora bugzilla, as well as raising this on the Samba users mailing list.
