It seems that I was the one who missed the obvious as I had expected that BackupPC_migrateV3toV4 would have allowed me to access the backups via the GUI.

This might be silly of me, but in V3 you should be able to just access the files from the CLI under the "pc" directory.... For me, that is /var/lib/backuppc/pc/hostname/backup-num/f%2f/fetc/.... The path/filename is slightly munged, but you should be able to work it out, special chars/spaces etc will be "escaped" so "f%2f" is actually "/" and "fetc" is "etc".
