So it was only the mail not being sent. No too serious.

(By the way: This is one of the reasons why I don't rely on the mail 
messages to monitor backup operations. Nagios is my choice of 
monitoring toolkit.)

I think that would be difficult, given the current design. Also, as 
the mail server is already in place to queue mail, I don't think this 
would be a vital Bacula feature.

If you're worried about this sort of problems happening again, I 
recommend to install a local mail server which you'd use to collect 
and send mail, and which would simply forward (and retry in case of 
failures) to your main mail server.
