I'm not sure that the VT extension has something to do with disk and network 
I/O. I assume also that if your laptop/server is old enough (more than 2 or 3 
years) to don't have this extension, the speed isn't the biggest factor.

If you want high speed for restoration, you should probably do raw backup 
instead of file level backup.

What i like in this solution, is that if you need something to fix the MBR, 
rights..., you will have everything loaded and ready to use.

Disks and Network will just appear to be always a VirtualBox device instead of 
being different for all PCs. I think that it simplify the boot CD creation 
process.

Now, if it's possible with a rather small patch to do it directly from Linux, 
it's better. But ACLs are just a step in the whole restoration process.
