That is exactly where I'm coming from. Yes, ntfs-3g is a ntfs filesystem implementation for Linux. Seems to work well, I created a Debian Live CD that has all the ntfs-3g stuff in it as well as ntfsprogs etc. I can partition the disk, create the filesystems, and restore, all from Linux, and it boots and runs. The system I backed up is a real machine but I'm restoring into a Xen VM so I have to muck around with the registry under Linux too to install and activate the IDE drivers so it actually boots. I could do all the above about 2 years ago too, but at that time there was no support for being able to access the metafile stuff in ntfs-3g like ACL's, OBJECT_ID's, and REPARSE_POINT's, without which the job just isn't being done properly.
