Actually, looking at the machine config again, I forgot that while I
*did* leave SUNWmysql{r,u} (which is 4.0.34) *installed*, because the
system dependencies turn out to make it non-trivial to uninstall it, I'm
not actually running that version. What I am actually *running*, and
what I compiled bacula-3.0.3 against, is the Sun/MySQL community package
of MySQL-5.1.34 in /opt/mysql.

I just looked again at the packages dependent on SUNWmysql, and in fact,
none of them are packages I need or even want; so, mysql4 is gone from
the machine, leaving only 5.1.34.

Pursuant to the further discussion, I note that this package DOES
provide libmysqlclient_r.a:

babylon4:root:~:9 # ls /opt/mysql/lib/
libdbug.a libmyisammrg.a libmysqlclient.so@
libmysqlclient_r.a libmysqlclient_r.so.16@ libmystrings.a libz.a
libheap.a libmysqlclient.a libmysqlclient.so.16@
libmysqlclient_r.la* libmysqlclient_r.so.16.0.0* libmysys.a libz.la*
libmyisam.a libmysqlclient.la* libmysqlclient.so.16.0.0*
libmysqlclient_r.so@ libmysqld.a libvio.a plugin/

This MySQL package is available here: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/
Currently available versions there are 5.0.90 or 5.1.42.
(I just updated mine to 5.1.42.)
