In my opinion, you would be wasting your time to attempt to re-write the FD in 
Ruby.  Our code is in a subset of C++, and we plan to stick with that, so we 
would be unable to support code written in Ruby.

If you are modifying the current FD, then you won't need the protocol 
specification.  However, the low level specification is documented in the 
Developer's guide, and there is a higher level specification there as well, 
but it is way out of date and probably not useful.

On the FD side, we do have experimental code that does proper backup of AFS.  
That might be worth considering.
