What FreeBSD system are you working with? I'm asking in case there is
something in your system
which is doing something different.
FYI, I've tried this on several systems. I've asked others via IRC,
Twitter, Google+, and Facebook. So far,
this command does not produce a newline on any OS. :(
printf %s\n foo
I was told: the POSIX shell quoting rules ensure that the string '%sn'
gets passed to the printf command
That is why the above produces foon, instead of the expected foo with a
newline.
