To be blunt: It _is_ less unreliable, all 4mm formats seem to be and I feel this is related to stresses on the plastic substrate, not helical vs linear issues.
You probably weren't on the list when I mentioned that I encountered similar problems with DAT vs VIDEO-8 for radio station automation (imagine 5-7 2.1m high racks full of DAT/video9 units, all controlled by a commodore64 or original IBM PC (not XT). Earlier versions were full of open reel machines and controlled by a IBM PC or CP/M box)
