Yes, this is a good point.  In fact, it might even be worth while to try:

mysqldump --user=$user --password=$password $database >$fifo 2>/dev/null 
</dev/null &

Another possible problem is that perhaps Bacula waits for the script to finish 
and in doing
so also waits for all children of the script to terminate.  In this case, using 
an Admin job that 
that starts before the backup would resolve the problem.
