Hello,
I've got a fresh install of 1.38.0 on FreeBSD6. So far backup jobs and restores to files and tapes work fine. One question, when defining a machine in the client resource is it better to use an IP or a dns name? I'm going to be getting in to backing up remote clients which is why i'm asking.

Depends. Especially with different views of the DNS namespace, an IP address might be more reliable. If you use dynamic IPs, a name is the better solution.

This gets really funny with diferent DNS namespaces on two sides of a firewall, where you want to use only one SD ;-)

I was wondering if someone could check out my director config, below, and tell me if it needs any optimization or could be condensed?

That would be much easier if we knew what you want to achieve... apart from that, simply trying it and, if any remain, posting questions is more likely to get help. From me, at least, and currentyl.

I'd like to get it working before i get in to dvd-writing, has anyone tried it with the dvd+rw-tools port and 1.38.0,

Not with FreeBSD, but using Linux I could observe a steady improvement in DVD writing. Currently, I'd consider it stable and worth a test in a production system. I wouldn't rely on DVD backups as much as I do on tape backups, but there are many reasons for that.

and encrypted communications between both internal network and external internet machines i want to back up, if anyone has any configs for that i'd like to hear from you as well. I'll write back with any sample files i come up with and firewall rules, i use pf, Kern mentioned he wanted to have some for the manual.
Good luck Kern on your sergery.
Thanks.
Dave.

For manual operation, use a different bsr file so you don't accidentailly overwrite what you might need later for real zeus jobs.

The following jobs could be defined easier with a default job.

# Most of these files are excluded not because we don't want
# them, but because Win2K won't allow them to be backed up

Have a look at the VSS support for windows; turning VSS on should allow to back up all these files, and most of them even in a usable state. I hope :-)

File = "/Documents and Settings/*/Application Data/*/Profiles/*/*/Cache/*"
File = "/Documents and Settings/*/Local Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/Windows/[Uu][Ss][Rr][Cc][Ll][Aa][Ss][Ss].*"

You can use an option to ignore case in file names, IIRC.

File = "/Documents and Settings/*/[Nn][Tt][Uu][Ss][Ee][Rr].*"
...
File = "/WINNT/Temp/*"
File = "/temp/*"
File = "/tmp/*"
File = "/pagefile.sys"

You really don't want these. Most of the time, at least.

}
}

I have the impression I have already seen this fileset.

And the next one. Define it only once.

Using disk files, you should limit the amount of space the pool can consume.
