Hi Josh (and others)! Thank you very much for writing!
>Yes, it is possible to mount USB drives at specific mount points. See >man fstab-sync. Basically, you must place a device information file in <snipped> Thank you. I had looked at several "autofs" man pages, but I hadn't thought about fstab stuff. I'll consider it. One is SimpleTech (400GB) and the other is Western Digital (320GB), so right now, vendor and model number are both quite different. >As for using them with bacula, why not simply plug in only one of them >at a time and let them both be mounted at the same mount point? Well, I am considering that. In fact, that's what I did -- this week. Here's my schedule: <<>> Name = "WeeklyCycle" Run = Full 1st sat at 1:05 Run = Differential 2nd-5th sat at 1:05 Run = Full 1st tue at 1:05 Run = Differential 2nd-5th tue at 1:05 Name = "WeeklyCycleAfterBackup" Run = Full 1st sat at 2:10 Run = Differential 2nd-5th sat at 2:10 Run = Full 1st tue at 2:10 Run = Differential 2nd-5th tue at 2:10 <<>> You'll see I have a full backup scheduled for the first (now) Saturday and Tuesday of the month, and differential afterward. The first time I did a backup in October, it was late enough that a differential was scheduled, but it said differential upgraded to a full. (Just as the manual says it will do.) After that, it was differential, and it looks to have done very well. Then, a full backup was done the first Saturday of November. I just used the newer Western Digital drive for the first time, this week. Tuesday, a differential was done. Period. From my understanding, at this time, I'm thinking that was done because the MySQL shows that a full backup was done -- to the same pathlist (/media/usbdisk) -- this month. Although, this full backup is not located on the USB disk that was used Tuesday morning. So, right now, the Western Digital only has one differential file and catalog backup. If I don't do one beforehand, though, it's only a couple of weeks before a full will be done to it, because it will be the first Tuesday of December. You're question actually helped me. Remember, I'm brand new to bacula. I didn't *think* it would be a problem, but I wasn't sure whether having two different devices, but on the same pathlist, would work well. Your question helps me to presume that it isn't just me that feels that this is an okay approach. Right now, that is exactly what I'm doing. *Only* the SimpleTech is turned on, Saturday morning. And, only the Western Digital is turned on, Tuesday morning. So, whichever one is turned on is on the pathlist /media/usbdisk and has the drive name /dev/sdc1. I'm thinking this will likely be how I continue doing it, at least for right now. My main purpose for this is, if I lose one device, I still have another -- completely separate -- device which will still have a backup -- within the last week. (Once I have a full as well as potential differentials on the Western Digital, I'll have it there, too.) This does accomplish my purpose, so far as I see right now. I am open to whatever suggestions you or anyone else have to offer! :-) Thank you! Barry -- Barry L.
