I've run `emerge sync' and emerge -v -u world since last response. A
new mysql was in portage after the sync. I ran:
  emerge -v -u mysql and the latest was built and installed.

I can't try your test command (-p) because mysql will not start now.

  root # /etc/init.d/mysql status
    * status:  stopped

  root # /etc/init.d/mysql start
   * working on 0
   * Starting mysqld0 (/etc/mysql/my.cnf) ...
  .......... * MySQL NOT started (0)

So my clean up campaing seems to set me back even further...
