Are you sure that the director is running on the same host as you try to run 
bconsole?

Check this using:
"ps ax | grep bacula-dir"

You can try to telnet to localhost to see if you see anything.

It should connect if you type: (linux)
"telnet localhost 9101"

If you type anything, it will disconnect.
