If you have gotten yourself into a problem with variable/non-variable block sizes, the current online manual gives some tips for getting yourself out of difficulties. Several users have recovered badly configured tapes, but I have never done it myself, so again, maybe the list can help you. If you read the new manual, be aware that a number of things have changed since 1.36.2 (probably a large number) so be careful.
