Looks like a hardware problem to me. The usual suggestion in such a case 
is not to check the cabling but to replace it :-)

Works wonders, just some weeks ago I change an internal scsi cable here 
and voilĂ , I save some MB of log output per day :-)

To verify if this is a hardware problem, I'd recommend to turn on parity 
checking again, and then use dd to send lots of prepared test data to 
the tape drive. Still, more sophisticated SCSI-hardware related problems 
usually don't show up until you really put some stress on the system.

For example, the case I mentioned above, only produced errors when I had 
more than one backup job running (the cable in question connected the 
SCSI HBA with a spool disk) and simultaneously despooled data to tape.

For testing, I ran multiple instances of badblocks on that disk and no 
errors occured.

Summary: The only relevant test is running in production.
