I personally have an LTO-2 autochanger with two drives (Overland), and it 
works out of the box.  99 out 100 (very rough estimate) of our users have few 
or no problems with any modern tape drive.

You have summarized the doc quite well.  Basically without having your 
specific hardware, it would be very difficult for an OpenSource project to 
"guarantee" that any particular drive works.

In the case of Pedro Moreno, I suspect his problem was related to hardware 
troubles (see below).

Connecting modern, fast SCSI devices is pretty exacting, needing: a proper 
SCSI controller suitable for your drive, proper *short* cables, correct 
termination, and a good kernel drive (many Linux kernels have broken SCSI 
drivers).  There are 16 zillion different types of SCSI adaptors/standards, 
mostly due to the fact that the speed keeps going up, if you get the wrong 
one for your drive, you are out of luck.

The archives can probably give you a good idea of what kind of SCSI controller 
to get ...
