Have you had a look at Debian GNU/Linux Live-CD
(http://mklivecd.sourceforge.net/)? I haven't used it, myself, but you might
give it a try & let us know how it works. Myself, I just back up all my
configuration files & a list of installed packages and use Knoppix.
